Preparing for an Interview

Ledeja White
EN 154- Interview Questions
January 30, 2009

1) Tell me about yourself.
A) Employers need to know about on potential employee’s background. The way a person presents their self and their past is very important. It is a lasting impression to the employer.
B) I would tell him or her simple facts first like where I’m from. Then move up to more job related details like experience(where I have worked and tasks I was responsible for).

2) Where do you see yourself in the next five (or ten) years?
A) The employer needs to know that the potential employee has many ambitions and is willing to work hard for their future.
B) I have big dreams. I would mention those dreams and mention how I plan on getting there.

3) What do you see as your weakness(es)?
A) I have been to many interviews and I do not know why they ask this question.
B) Over time I have learned that it is best to take a strength and make it seem like a weakness. For example, my weakness is getting impatient with myself when I do not complete a task fast, but still do it accurately.

4) What makes you believe you are suitable for this position?
A) Employers typically ask questions that can help them decide whether or not a potential employee has what they are looking for. They might also be trying to see if the person has the confidence and self- esteem to back up their skills and experience. It is related to the first question.
B) To answer this question I would remember the qualifications listed in the job posting. Then I would talk about my skills and experience and relate it to the qualifications asked for within the job posting.

5) Do you have any questions for me/us?
A) I guess the employer wants to measure a potential employer’s level of interest in the company and the job itself. This is usually the last question asked.
B) It is not a good thing to ask about stuff like salary and employee benefits, etc. Instead ask questions related to the company and its practices.

Ledeja,

For "b." you were to actually provide answers, rather than generally state the theme you'd take to answer each question. I wanted to be able to comment mostly on your actual answers to such questions.

Also, within your rationale, such as #5a. --don't use unsure language such as "I guess..."!
